Gravimetric Analysis Simulation

SIMULATION PROCEDURE

Use the following link for the external software simulation: simulation provided by chemcollective (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

  1. Click on the chemcollective link. Read the introduction and explore the three tabs, “Solutions, Glassware, Tools”. Each tab will show you what you have available for this experiment. The chemicals available are
    • A solution labeled “Solution 3” which contains an unknown amount of silver nitrate
    • distilled water
    • solid sodium chloride
    • solid silver nitrate
  2. Design a short procedure to determine the mass and concentration of silver nitrate. Not all chemicals and glassware needs to be used.
    • Some useful tips to use the virtual lab
      • click on Solution 3, and it will appear in your workbench. Some additional info on Solution 3 will show up on the left part of the window.
      • Click on “Stockroom” to expand the options
      • click on the NaCl bottle in the Solutions tab,
      • drag the NaCl bottle image in your workbench over the image of solution 3. You will now have options for the transfer of chemicals. Add 5g of NaCl by putting a 5 in the field and clicking pour
      • after you poured in some NaCl, check the information on Solution 3. It should display useful information on the precipitate as well as temperature.
      • you can always clear the workbench (right-click in the workbench space and select “Clear Workbench”, or you can create multiple workbench spaces (file-> add new workbench)
  3. Determine the mass of silver nitrate in the unknown solution.
  4. Show your work and attach a screenshot of the confirmation page, from the simulation.
