Shinhwa, the oldest male Korean pop group with an original lineup, announced a comeback after a four-year hiatus. The group released its last album, Volume 9, in 2008, prior to the military service of its members. Before the comeback, Korea’s mandatory military service for males virtually ensured the disbandment of male pop groups created by large Korean agencies. Shinhwa had already beaten the odds by staying together more than ten years, but many believed it was unlikely that the group would ever reunite. Yet, in 2012 Shinhwa released The Return, their tenth studio album, after holding two sold-out concerts in Seoul. Shinhwa’s reunion sparked a series of reunions of other veteran pop groups. Two years later, g.o.d (Groove Overdose), another first-generation male pop group, announced its comeback, released the album Chapter 8 (2014) nine years after its last album Into the Sky (2005), and embarked on a tour that included two dates in the United States. Popular female group S.E.S reunited for its twentieth anniversary with the album Remember in 2016. H.O.T., the male pop group that started it all, reunited for a performance on the television show Infinite Challenge in 2018. These reunions not only point to the longevity of Korean pop groups but also reveal a continued intertextuality common to Korean “idol” groups.
