1 CMNS 2180 – Read Think Engage Package Week 6– Social Media Communication in Activism This week, you are invited to think somewhat cautiously about the energy and potential of social media as a site or motivation for activism. We will ask questions about how voices gain attention and resonate through social media communication, and the relationship to existing structures of information flow, including the use of protesters as citizen journalists, feeding narratives of news institutions. We will also ask questions about the relationships between online movements and resulting action and opportunities for social change. Part A – Activism and Social Media Communication Read/Listen 1. Read Herminda’s Activism and Social Media Communication PDF. Focus on Ch. 5 at first. We will look more at Ch. 9 in the next part. 2. Finally, listen to my Podcast A – Activism and Social Media Communication. There are slides to follow if you like. Engage. For you, to help you learn. Not for submission. Take a bit of time to reflect on your own awareness of and/or participation in activism/protest movements through social media communication.
